Phthalates Phthalates adalah sebatian kimia yang digunakan untuk melembutkan plastik seperti PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). Ia digunakan dalam pelbagai produk pengguna termasuk alat-alat permainan dan digunakan untuk penjagaan kanak-kanak. Pada tahun 1999, ahli negara kesatuan Eropah telah menyuarakan kebimbangan tentang kesan ‘teruk’ (adverse) sebatian phthalates terhadap kesihatan kanak-kanak. Direktorat Keselamatan Produk Pengguna Am telah mengenakan larangan sementara terhadap penggunaan phthalates dalam produk kanak-kanak termasuk alat permainan. Pada tahun larangan tersebut dikekalkan untuk alat-alat permainan di bawah Keselamatan Produk Pengguna Am Directive 2005/84/EC – Kesatuan Eropah. Sisters  Raechel and Jacqueline Houck in the US were victims of a fatal car accident in Santa Cruz, US in 2004. The car they were driving was a Chrysler PT Cruiser – one of the models involved in a recall. The car rental company did not ground the models and rented out to the sisters and apparently began leaking steering fluid and suddenly caught fire before crashing into an oncoming semi-tractor trailer. As reported in a 2010 ABC News investigation, the car had been under a safety recall for the potential fire hazard, but was still rented to the sisters (ABC News, July 10, 2012). The parents of these sisters were awarded USD 15 million and a new law was drafted to ensure that car rental companies repair or ground unsafe cars if those cars are involved in any recalls.   A two-year-old boy from West Chester, Pennsylvania, died in February 2014 when a six-drawer Malm chest fell on him and pinned him to a bed, the statement said. A 23-month-old child from Snohomish, Washington, was killed in June 2014 when a three-drawer Malm chest tipped over and trapped him. The US consumer product safety commission says consumers should stop using Ikea’s wardrobes and chests of drawers for children unless they are secured to a wall. The Swedish furniture giant is offering a free kit to help consumers do that. The kit will be available to consumers who bought 27m of the furniture items above specific heights, including seven million of the Malm chests .
